DPE/Planets/CASPAR/nestor Joint Training Event: Starting out: Preserving Digital Objects - Principles and Practice

DigitalPreservationEurope (DPE), Preservation and Long-term Access through Networked Services (Planets), Cultural, Artistic and Scientific knowledge for Preservation, Access and Retrieval (CASPAR) and Network of expertise in Digital long-term preservation (nestor) are delighted to announce that they will be delivering the latest in a series of collaborative training initiatives to introduce the Principles of Digital Objects Preservation. This event will be held in Prague, Czech Republic from October 13-17 2008. This event is being organised in cooperation with the 'WePreserve' Forum.

Benefits of Attendance
This training event will introduce participants to a number of key digital preservation principles and provide them with an opportunity to apply this knowledge through a number of practical, hands-on exercises. Participants will leave with:
- an awareness and understanding of key digital preservation issues and challenges,
- an appreciation of the range of roles and responsibilities involved with digital preservation activity,
- knowledge about the reference model for Open Archival Information System (OAIS),
- a familiarity with file formats currently considered beneficial for preservation,
- a developed understanding of the role and use of metadata and representation information,
- knowledge of the preservation planning process and its benefits to overall digital preservation strategies,
- an insight into the concepts of trust and trustworthiness in the context of digital preservation,
- a working knowledge of the issues surrounding audit methodologies and self-certification of digital repositories
Target Audience
This event will be of value to practitioners and researchers from the archives, libraries and museums sector, as well as other institutions such as data archives, government departments, legal and commercial sectors with an interest in the topic of digital preservation.
Format
Internationally established lecturers will lead half-day sessions. Lecturers will assist attendees in understanding the main principles of digital preservation and how to address them in practice through a number of hands-on exercises. Students will be provided with access to online course materials relating to the topics that will be discussed both prior to and following the training event.
Programme
This intensive training programme will consist of three days access to online pre-course training, 8 half day sessions in a face to face setting, a Forum and access to three days of on-line post-course training. Expert lecturers will lead each session and most will be available through the whole week for further discussion.

- For members of the DPE User Community, CASPAR User Community and WePreserve Consortium members - 100 Euros
- All other participants - 250 Euros.

Venue
The training event will take place at the National Library of Prague. The whole building complex, called Klementinum, is the largest and among the oldest building complexes in the Old Town. Founded in 1232, Klementinum covers over 20 000 square meters with many of Europe's great astronomers, scientists, musicians and philosophers worked here, influencing the development of this wonderful array of buildings. Part of the training will take place at the seat of Charles University called Karolinum (Zelená posluchárna - Green Lecture Hall), about 7 minutes walking distance from Klementinum. The entrance is from Celetná street Nr. 20 (see the map). Charles University ("Karlova Univerzita" in Czech) is the oldest University in the Middle-Eastern part of Europe. The WePreserve Forum will be held in the conference hall at the Novotneho Lavka. This building is only 3 minutes walk from the National Library - see the map.
Accommodation
Lecturers will reside in the 'U lilie' hotel and Students are also encouraged to arrange their accommodation in the 'U lilie' hotel there to enable them to spend additional time exchanging ideas with fellow students and with lecturers. The hotel has offered a special discounted rate from 70 Euros per night for participants of this event.
