19-21 April 2010
Pontificia Università Gregoriana, Rome, Italy
While we can produce and share information in digital form at an increasing rate and store data in an ever smaller space, the span of time over which we can confidently keep hold of it is diminishing.
To retain information to comply with regulatory/governance reasons, for business continuity, or for other valuable purposes, we must take action to ensure that this information will still be available in the future.
The final in the series of three-day training events, 'Digital Preservation - The Planets Way', will take place in Rome on 19 - 21 April 2010 with the support of the Pontificia Università Gregoriana.
Day 1 will address the case for digital preservation, digital preservation as a risk management activity, the action that needs to be taken and introduce the Planets framework, tools and services as an integrated approach to digital preservation. Local organisations will present two case studies to show how they are preserving digital collections.
Days 2 and 3 provide an opportunity to meet and learn from the experts, creators and developers of Planets. Using a sample collection, you will gain hands-on experience of Planets tools and services. There will also be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, network with peers and to try out tools and exercises.
Register now for day 1 only at a cost of EUR95 or for the whole three-day event at a cost of EUR199 at: http://www.tcp-events.co.uk/planets2010/.
Places are limited and registration will close on Friday 9 April 2010.

Evidence-based evaluation has been used successfully for many years to
establish trust in traditional repositories such as museums and archives. It
is, however, a mistake to assume that the trust earned by a repository that
successfully manages and preserves analogue material can be transferred to
their digital holdings. Such cavalier assumptions pose a substantial threat
to the long-term accessibility and reusability of our collective memory and
scholarship. Recent international activity has championed the need for
evidence-based evaluation of digital repositories. However, the work to date
has focussed largely on the development of a criteria checklist and on the
audit itself. Considerably less thought has been committed to the shape of
the overall certification framework that by necessity must surround it. This
seminar aims to bring together repository practitioners, professional
auditors, representatives from international funding bodies, and members of
the research community to determine the feasibility of digital repository
certification on an international scale.
